The Importance of delivering authentic Indigenous Education in a system that won’t recognise the true Indigenous history of Australia.

Mr Tony Keeble1
1DET Victoria, Victoria, Australia

Abstract:
Outdoor School is a DET Government School that operates two campuses in North East Victoria.

Outdoor School is very conscious of its ability to reach and not reach certain cohorts within the education system. In 2016 Outdoor School decided to offer a curriculum based indigenous program in the Kimberley region of Australia.

This presentation is a look at that journey. It will include curriculum documentation, student work, student assessment.

The presentation will also look at ways that our school has included ingenuous education into our outdoor learning curriculum including the Marrung Policy and Cultural and Sensitivity Training to all staff.

The presentation also discusses the need for the Australian Education system to include the ‘truth tellings’ of Indigenous Australian’s and not the blatant cover up by white Anglo men.

About OEA and Outdoors NSW

Outdoor Education Australia (OEA)  was established in 2006 as a national network of outdoor education associations. The organisation facilitates communication between state and territory outdoor education associations about the practice and delivery of outdoor education; advocates for outdoor education across primary, secondary and tertiary education; and provides policy advice.

Outdoors NSW is the go-to place for all things outdoors in NSW.

The peak body for the outdoors in NSW, the organisation, (formerly known as ORIC), represents the outdoor community, advances outdoor standards, safety and practices, and fosters greater participation in the outdoors.
